Hong Kong has its perks and with many local artists a stone throw away we got to chill out and follow Chino Lam of 豆もやし社長 – mame moyashi around for the day. Giving you guys a chance to see a glimpse of his surroundings and his new studio and visiting business meetings.
Love seafood, Chino visits his local fishmonger and surprises him with the special edition Master Giant Claw. Chino is always on the move, heading to meetings and galleries and you never know what’s on the schedule. We tagged along as he hit up the guys at ToySoul as well as Unbox Industries. Sorry, no secrets can be revealed :p
Fun facts! Chino’s favourite food is EGGs! Pure protein power. That day we went to his local Hong Kong Cha chaan teng.
No space T_T so last minute ditch to another Cha chaan teng for some noodles and Eggs and we had Hong Kong style French toast finished off with come classic HK tea.
Whilst chowing down on some yummy food we got another fun fact! Chino’s favourite film is actually 1992 Scent of a Woman.
Chino gave us a tour of his new studio and the down-low of his time at Bandai. Walls filled with sentimental items and artwork as well as prototypes.
Chino loves animals and he has 2 pet tortoise at his studio. Can you tell Chino’s favourite animal is the tortoise? Meet Diurama and Dorina.
Chino also keeps a part of his personal collection at the studio and his love of Basketball and street culture shows in his collection, plus not forgetting the love of classic vintage toys.
As soon as we entered, we saw the HUGE Maguro Senpai! What put Chino and Mame Moyashi on the map! and leading up to being crowned the Designer Toy Award winner. We couldn’t resist taking a photo with it.
The eye-opener was finally seeing the official NIKE x HYPERBEAST x Chino Lam collaboration in person as well as seeing the Leborn James x John Elliott More Than An Athlete piece that Chino made for the showcase. What you don’t see in the photos is the level of detail that we saw when the only existing piece of Chino’s [ Extinction ] for the Art Vinyl Exhibition by Chino Lam was also at the studio. In-person the detail is even crazier.
Seeing all the Chino’s masters and prototype under one roof remind us how much he has accomplished over a short space of time. Not only known for his designer toys, we also got to see one of his paintings in person which is pretty rare.
Neary the end of the day and just in time for a spot of designer toy shopping at ToyStation.
Our time was over with Chino in Hong Kong and we would like to say thank you to Chino and his wife Erica for opening up their personal space and giving their time for The Toy Chronicle.
