Taller 111 x Toytoy presents a designer toy with a difference! meet Tía Empanada 2.0, not just any old wooden designer toy but one with a backstory as well as upscaled wood that has been discarded from carpentry waste reducing the carbon footprint. We won’t ramble on and let Taller 111 x Toytoy to present to you the lovely Tía Empanada 2.0.
Tia Empanada is a 57-year-old woman, she worked her entire life in an insurance company until she was 55 when she found out that she could not get a pension because she filled out the form incorrectly when she started working at an early age. From there she began to fight for her rights, and the anger she felt motivated her to fight for everything.
Due to her stress from work, she became an avid smoker, she can only walk in heels, and always carries a briefcase where she can hide what is necessary before any search. Inside there is a duckling, a reflection of her noble soul. After the pandemic, and for fear of being a victim of COVID, the second version no longer smokes 🙂
OriginsTwo reasons invited me to create this Art Toy:
My professed love for this diverse typical dish of our cuisine, which, depending on the region, the corner, the ingredients and the time of day offer a great variety.
The police code created two years ago, which wanted this food to disappear from its natural ecosystem (the empanada’s experimentation laboratory is the streets) that threatened to make them disappear.
Thus, between 2018 and 2019 I created the first version of this cholesterol Tía; and after some personal questioning regarding our responsibility to the planet, I decided to invent a new version, whose raw materials are friendly to the planet. This change in material forced me to rethink the form from the technique, thus achieving a more synthetic result.
Armed with scraps of pine in order to reuse carpentry waste, Tía’s arms (III, IV), bow tie (VI) and upper occiput (II) are joined by magnets. These, in turn, can be exchanged with each other.
Complement its unique style with that inseparable bag (V). There are two styles that the buyer can choose when wearing it: a square bag for the more traditional ones, and a semi-round bag for those more irreverent minds.
